Finest Kind has been the top producer of marlin year after year.

LAHAINA - The 37-foot Merritt FINEST KIND captured the 1999 top Lahaina Harbor charter sport fishing boat title among the 15 boats.

It weighed 28 blue marlin (most among the fleet) totaling 7,366 pounds (highest total), 18 striped marlin (most among the fleet) totaling 744 pounds (highest total), and 45 Spearfish (most among the fleet) totaling 1,266 pounds (highest total). The boat's 91 billfish (most among the fleet) weighed a grand total of 9,406 pounds (the highest total weight).

The boat released an additional seven billfish, including one blue marlin, five striped marlin and one spearfish.

The boat's 29 blue marlin (second highest total blue marlin), 23 striped marlin (highest total striped marlin) and 46 Spearfish (third highest total Spearfish) brought its yearly bullish captured) 98 (highest total capture). This give the FINEST KIND the best billfish catch average - every 2.6 trips.

The FINEST KIND caught six blue marlin weighing more than 400 pounds (most among the fleet). Its largest fish was an 800-pounder (second largest of the year and 14th largest for a charter boat since 1980), with a 528 pounder (13th), 44- pounder (17th), 445 pounder (18th), 425 pounder (9th) and a 4lO pounder (22nd).

Its best month of fishing was January, when the boat caught 22 billfish (tied for second best monthly catch). Seven blue marlin, four striped marlin and 10 Spearfish were weighed with an additional blue marlin released.

The FINEST KIND crew had 16 double and three triple billfish catch days.

In second place was the 31-foot Bertram EXACT. It weighed 24 blue marlin (tied for second most) weighing 5,081 pounds (third highest total), 16 striped marlin (second most) weighing 736 pounds (second highest total), and 39 Spearfish (second most) weighing 1, 152 pounds (second highest total). 

 

 

The boat's 79 bill- fish (second most among the fleet) weighed a grand total of 6,969 pounds (second highest total weight).

The boat released an additional 12 bill- fish, including two blue marlin, two striped marlin and eight Spearfish.

The boat's 26 blue marlin (third highest total blue marlin), 18 striped marlin (second highest total striped marlin), and 47 Spearfish (second highest total Spearfish) brought its yearly billfish catch to 91 (second highest total capture). This gave the EXACT a billfish catch average every 3.6 trips.

The EXACT caught three blue marlin weighing over 500 pounds. Its largest fish was a 600-pounder (fifth largest), with a 535-pounder (10th) and a 533 pounder (I Ith).

Its best month of fishing was January, when the boat caught 22 billfish (tied for second best monthly catch). One blue marlin, three striped marlin and 13 Spearfish were weighed, with an additional one striped marlin and four Spearfish released.

Its best run was also in January, where in an eight day period it caught 14 billfish made up of two double, one triple and one quadruple catch. The EXACT crew lead 14 double, three triple and one quadruple billfish catch days.
